now when i caught myself I HAD TO STOP MYSELF FROM SAYING something that i should've never thought of you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As Emma made her way down to the camp fire, she couldn't help but smile to herself. Things had been going so well for her lately, and while she didn't understand why, she wasn't going to question them. Them being the gods who decided all this fun stuff, got it? Kay good, because i'm not explaining myself any more than that. But back to the real subject. Emma was just in a good mood, she'd actually been in a good mood all throughout camp. She was with Nate, Madison wasn't trying to ruin them, and Ryder was coming to camp. Sure, he was a bit late, but better late then never, isn't that true? In Emma's mind it was very much so true, and she didn't care how late he was. All she cared about was the fact that he was finally going to be able to spend the summer with her. Emma had been going to camp for almost five years, and never hadn Ryder showed much intrest in coming.
Sure, Ryder was interseted in music. Emma knew that much. But he'd never really wanted to come to camp. Emma never really knew why, but now that he decided he'd come, well, Emma wasn't going to ask questions. If he wanted to come, then whatever the reason may be was fine with her. She couldn't wait to see him again, she'd been spending so much time with Mitchie and Nate, she had almost forgotten about Ryder. Okay, no, that sounded bad. She hadn't forgotten Ryder. He was her best friend, that wasn't going to happen. He just hadn't been around much so the emptyness from missing him, had just been filled in by other people. Other people like Mitchie, Cailtlyn, and Nate.
Come to think of it, she hadn't seen Nate around very much. Maybe he'd been avoiding her. Maybe she'd done something? Or he'd done something? She didn't really know, but what she did know was that he was spending an awful lot of time with Madison lately. He was always texting her telling her that he woulnd't be around because he'd be with Madison. Madison, Madison, Madison. But the last thing that Emma wanted to do was have a repeat of last year, so becoming jelouse of Madison just wasn't an option if she wanted her and Nate to last at all, which she did so shall we just stop this now?
Emma moved her sunglasses to cover her eyes as she looked into the sun. The bright, bright sun, hence the sunglasses. As she continued to make her way to the camp fire she couldn't help but keep her head on a swivle, hoping to catch a glimpse of Ryder. They were suppose to be meeting at the camp fire around five, just after Emma's last class was finished. She'd practically ran half way here, and then she got out of breath, and had to walk. Hey, she'd been teaching dance all day, it takes alot out of a person. Emma sighed to herself when she didn't see Ryder anywhere as she took a set on one of the logs that was around the fire. Maybe while she waited Nate or Mitchie would come find her? Probably not, but you never know.

making plans to raise some hell, celebratin' our senior year,we had a trashbag full of clothes and a suitcase full of beerwe got pulled over by the Alabama state patrol, but they never found the boozeso they had to let us go. It was weird, being here. Ryder had never really been the camp kind of guy. He was more into partying on the beach throughout the summertime. Though, the partying was never as fun because Emma was always gone. There was just something about that girl that made him realize life wasn't just about being stupid... though it was all about having fun. He wouldn't tell her that he had snuck about, oh, I don't know, 4 bottles of liquor in his bags.
Good start for camp, eh? Oh well. If things stressed him out, that was his de-stresser. Him and Emma shared that much. As he pulled his car into the camp, he turned off the engine and got out of the car. He looked around for a moment, wondering what the hell he had gotten himself into. Okay, maybe not so much. He had told himself that he was going to be open minded and actually give this place a chance. Besides, it was all for Emma, and he would've walked to the edges of the earth for that girl.
If anyone asked, they were best friends, but Ryder had thought differently for years now. Best friends didn't fall asleep in each other's arms. Best friends didn't hug like Ryder and Emma did. And best friends definitely didn't look at each other how Ryder looked at Emma. That just wasn't common. Though, Emma had been completely oblivious to it over the years. It irked him that she came to camp and started dating Nate Gray last year. Stupid cookie cutter pop star. Ryder didn't know him to not like him, but he just got a bad feeling about him sometimes. And now she was with him again. And it pissed Ryder off to no end, especially since she was supposed to be with him in the end. He already knew that much.
He dropped his stuff off in his cabin, introducing himself to his cabin-mates quickly before checking his watch. He was supposed to be meeting Emma around 5 at the campfire. Okay, now where the hell was the campfire? He looked around and saw a small sign with a campfire picture on it and an arrow. He rolled his eyes. "How quaint." He said, to himself, mostly, as he followed the path. Seriously... he didn't get this camp thing. But oh well, he was here, he couldn't turn back now.
He got there and saw a small girl sitting on a log. That dark hair. He knew it. He walked up behind her and placed his hands over her eyes, just being funny. He figured she'd guess eventually, but he really was too impatient for that trivial task. He released her and jumped around to stand in front of her. "I'm here!" He said, putting his arms out almost in a 'ta-da!' pose. He started laughing a bit and looked down at her. "God, I've missed you."

now when i caught myself I HAD TO STOP MYSELF FROM SAYING something that i should've never thought of you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Emma was having her doubts about whether or not Ryder would actually like it at camp. He’d never really been an outdoorsy person. Like with the whole camping thing. They’d gone camping once when Emma was eleven, and that ended horribly. Emma wasn’t really one for dirt and stuff, but she wasn’t such a girly girl that she couldn’t take a little mud. It hardly ever rained, but when it did it was hell to walk around camp. Ryder probably wouldn’t enjoy that all too much. The first few years that Emma was at camp she hated when it rained. She hated trudging through the mud to get to class, but now that she was use to it, well it didn’t bother her all that much. She’d learned what weather meant to had to leave your cabin with extra socks, and what weather meant that you’d need to go full blown summer. Once you’d been at camp for five years, you figured things like these out.
But Emma just couldn’t help but worry about how Ryder would take things at camp. They were from Boston, total city slickers. It had taken Emma three years to get use to camp, and she wasn’t so sure if Ryder could adapt even that quickly. But then again, maybe he’d surprise her and randomly just become this total nature obsessed out doors mans. Course, that probably wouldn’t happen but Emma could always wish for it to, right? Right. She could take him throughout the camp, and point out all the little tricks that had taken her three years to figure out. That way, he’d be ahead of the game and he could catch up on the five years of summer camp that he missed.
Like Emma’d said, Ryder wasn’t a camp person so what Emma was wondering was why Ryder had even decided to come to camp. He hadn’t shown much interest in it over the past five years, but after Emma had come home from camp crying over Nate, he’d suddenly wanted to go. Although that shouldn’t of surprised Emma much. Ryder was Emma’s best friend, he was suppose to be all protective of her. He was suppose to kick any guys ass who made Emma cry. But now that Emma and Nate were back together, she was hoping that Ryder wouldn’t make any attempt at getting to him. She liked the way things were with Nate, but she hadn’t seen him around lately.
Emma had told Nate that Ryder was coming to camp for the last half of camp, and while Nate wasn’t fully enthused he didn’t seem like he hated the idea. There was that saying what’s yours is mine, right? So Emma’s best friend should have been able to get along with Nate. Of course, that rule was pretty much screwed when it came to Emma and Maddie, but that was the exception. There were exceptions to every rule, didn’t you know. So maybe if Emma wanted Ryder and Nate to get along, then she should make an effort towards Madison? Nah.
As someone’s hand found their way around Emma’s eyes, she grinned. It had to of been Ryder, and by the sound of the persons entrance it deffinitley was. She jumped up from the log as Ryder stood in front of her, “RYDER!” she shouted, avoiding the looks she was getting from many of the observing campers. She hugged her best friend tightly, not really wanting to let go. They hadn’t seen each other in over a month and a half. That must have been the longest that they’d gone without seeing each other, but she could handle more. She went three months at a time without seeing Mitchie, her other best friend. Ah, her two best friends in one place, could it get any better?
Emma stepped back from Ryder, and clapped her hands together like a five-year old. She was just so excited that he was here. She grabbed Ryder’s hand and pulled him to sit next to her on the log. With her free hand she moved her sun glasses off of her eyes and onto her head. “I’m so happy you’re here!” she said, grinning from ear to ear.

making plans to raise some hell, celebratin' our senior year,we had a trashbag full of clothes and a suitcase full of beerwe got pulled over by the Alabama state patrol, but they never found the boozeso they had to let us go. He started laughing as she screamed his name and jumped up to hug him. That's more like it. That was how things were supposed to be. Ryder's mind turned in circles. Why had he come to camp? To spend a summer with this girl. This one girl who could always make his day no matter what. He smiled down at her and picked her up, spinning her around in a circle before setting her back down. "I always love enthusiastic hellos." He said, laughing down at her and smiling at her appearance.
Camp Emma was still the same Emma. Just in outdoorsy clothes. He honestly wanted to just take her behind a tree and kiss her. But that was against the rules. And also, she was dating that Nate guy again. Damn him. Damn that boy who had spent his entire summer making Emma cry. Okay, maybe not, but if she came home crying, then he might as well have been doing that. Emma didn't cry. She was too strong to do that, and it had pissed Ryder off to no end knowing that she had shed tears for some cookie cutter pop star.
BUT. Yes, there's a but. He was going to be nice to Nate until he started to get suspicious. Then all hell would break lose. Nate's ass would be his if he did anything to remotely come close to hurting this girl. She pulled him to sit next to a log and was super excited to see him. It made his heart feel light. "Well, I would say I'm happy to be here... but camp isn't my thing. I am, however, happy to spend an entire summer with my best friend." He said, putting his arm around her and hugging her.
He looked up at the campfire and looked back to Em. This would be so romantic some other time. But right now, it was just kind of chill, and he liked that. He had his guitar case, and was considering taking out his guitar to play. But he'd wait for that, as well, right now, he just kind of wanted to talk to her. "So, what's there to do around here besides stare at a fire and a pretty girl?"He said, smirking at her and looking back to the fire.

now when i caught myself I HAD TO STOP MYSELF FROM SAYING something that i should've never thought of you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Emma laughed along with Ryder as he laughed. He could always manage to make her laugh, by doing basically nothing. Then again, usually it didn’t take much for Emma to burst out laughing. She just wasn’t generally a serious person, but you all knew that about her by now. Of course that all went out the window once she was upset. When that happened everything she knew was shot to hell. She didn’t care what anyone did, it would take a lot of her to laugh and for her to stop her screaming. Ryder was actually one of the few people who could calm her down when she went onto one of her massive rampages. Ryder, and Mitchie. And Nate, but only sometimes. He hadn’t really figured out how to do that entirely. Sure, he knew how to make her mad at he’d been straying away from taking that root for the most part, but bringing her down from her rants was hard. Very hard.
It was probably the fact that Ryder was like Emma’s brother, that he was able to stop her freak-outs. Mitchie was like her sister, and she could do the same thing. It must have been the whole like a sibling thing. Except, sometimes, Emma couldn’t help but get the feeling that Ryder thought of Emma as more then a sister. As more then a best friend. Sure, there had been times when Emma felt that way too, I mean they’d known each other since they were young, and growing up Ryder was always around. But now that Emma was with Nate, she just couldn’t think that way. She wouldn’t let herself. She was happy with Nate, and she didn’t want their relationship to change. But he had been acting weird lately. Emma couldn’t remember the last time it’d just been them. Nate had been insisting that Mitchie or Shane or even Madison come with them wherever they went. It just didn’t seem like normal Nate behavior.
Emma grinned at what he said next. See, Ryder wasn’t a camp person at all, but she knew he’d endure it for her. It was just as if…well there weren’t many things that Ryder loved that Emma didn’t like, but if she could think of one then she’d do it with him. She knew he’d rather be at the beach or something then here at camp, but there was a beach at camp! He could at least try to have some fun with it. She smiled to herself as Ryder hugged her, just glad to be with him again. She looked around at all the people looking at them and groaned. It was likely that they’d tell all there little friends and there would be some nasty rumor spread about how Emma, the bitch, was cheating on Nate. She wasn’t very well liked by many of the Connect Three obsessed fan girls, just because of the whole dating Nate thing. She was “stealing away their future husband”, as some of them enjoyed reminding her several times a day.
Emma again ignored the looks from some of the on-lookers and turned her attention fully and completely to Ryder. She shrugged once he asked her what there was to do around here. Well, Emma usually just hung around with Mitchie and Nate. They’d walk around, or practice, and that was really it. Well there were all the jams that occurred every so often, and oh yes! The beach. There was a beach that should excite Ryder a bit. “Well, there’s a beach, so we swim. And we rehearse and we just mainly walk around. Oh!” Emma paused for dramatic effect, “You get to meet Mitchie! And Nate! Ah! I’m just so excited! You’re going to love them Ryder, I promise.” She said. Okay, lie. She couldn’t promise Ryder that he’d love Nate because he probably wouldn’t. Maybe they’d tolerate each other, just as Madison and Emma did. But that was better then nothing.

making plans to raise some hell, celebratin' our senior year,we had a trashbag full of clothes and a suitcase full of beerwe got pulled over by the Alabama state patrol, but they never found the boozeso they had to let us go. He watched her laugh and just smiled. There was just something about this girl that made his day so much brighter. If it was the last thing he ever did, he was going to prove to her that he was the only guy truly good enough for her. But right now, they were best friends and she had a boyfriend. So he was going to respect that. It didn't mean he wouldn't flirt relentlessly, though. That was just how Ryder was.
He raised an eyebrow. "Oh, I'm definitely down for some swimming." He said, secretly wanting to go there at night. He was a romantic in a way that he liked romantic settings. But he sucked ass at actually being romantic. That just wasn't his forte, and sometimes he wondered if that's why him and Emma hadn't ended up together. From what he had heard through the grapevine, Nate was pretty suave when it came to being romantic.
He scowled a bit when she said he'd love them. "I can't wait to meet Mitchie!" He said, smiling at Emma and looking across at the fire. He didn't want to meet Nate, honestly. He was afraid he'd kill him. Ryder didn't care that they were back together. He had hurt Emma once, and that was enough fuel for his fire. "If I am allowed, I'm throwing out my opinion, but I don't think you should be with him."
He turned to look at her, not really wanting to say what he was about to, but he did anyways. "I think you should be with someone who genuinely cares about you. Who puts you first because you are the most important thing in his life. Someone who will never make you cry, not even if he didn't mean to. A guy who is willing to be out of his comfort zone simply because he wants to be with you. And last, someone who likes you just the way you are and doesn't want you to change for anyone, especially not for him." He said, remembering her saying something about trying to be better for Nate.
It had pissed him off when she had told him that. He liked her just the way she was, and this Nate character seemed a bit sketchy to him at the moment. Where the hell was he, anyways? Not with Emma, that's for sure. He was probably with that Madison girl Emma had told him about. Emma may not see it, but Ryder knew a guy's mind. There was something there. Even if Emma didn't see it. He just sighed and looked at the fire, wanting to know what she had to say.

now when i caught myself I HAD TO STOP MYSELF FROM SAYING something that i should've never thought of you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Emma smiled at Ryder’s reply. She knew that he liked the water, it wasn’t as if there was a real beach in Boston. If you wanted to swim you had to go to the Y or something, and Emma hated places like that. Public gyms just grossed her out. Like, other people had been touching all the equipment and it was all sweaty and Emma just didn’t like the concept of a gym at all. The beach was another thing. She could and would tolerate the beach, it was one of her favorite places. Especially the beach here at camp, even if it was a bit small, that didn’t matter to Emma. It just put two of her favorite things together. A beach, and camp and now that Ryder was here it was three things. The beach, camp, and Ryder. Oh! And what if Mitchie and Nate came along? Well if that happened then Emma would just be one happy camper.
Emma’s smile stayed on her face as Ryder said he couldn’t wait to meet Mitchie. That was good, she was sure that they’d like each other. Emma talked constantly about Ryder to Mitchie, so she might as well of known him and it was the same way with Mitchie. The two were after all her best friends. But what he said next set her back. She rolled her eyes, and moved her eyes to the fire. She was afraid of this. She really didn’t want Ryder to hate Nate. In the beginning when the plan was for Ryder to come to camp, Nate and Emma weren’t back together. She could of cared less about what had happened between Ryder and Nate. Ryder could have gone crazy on Nate’s ass and she wouldn’t of cared at all. They would have been done and over with, and Nate wouldn’t be any of Emma’s business. Of course, this plan worked until after being around each other for less than an hour the two got back together. Ryder hadn’t even entered her mind for a good day or so, until she remembered how Emma’d come home from camp last year, crying her eyes out about him. So now that they were back together, Emma was pretty sure that everything she’d said bad about Nate could and would be used against her. Shit.
But what Ryder said about Nate just really made her want to take back coming home from camp last year, and crying to Ryder about him. Now all Ryder would do was hate on Nate because of what she’d said about him last year. She was angry though, she didn’t know. And who was Ryder to judge, he didn’t actually know Nate. All he knew was what Emma had told him, and what he’d read in magazine articles. She bit her lip, thinking over what she wanted to say. She didn’t want to word it wrong. She didn’t want to say anything that would make Ryder hate Nate even more, that just wasn’t an option right now. If that happened then Ryder would flip shit, leave right now and go kick Nate’s ass. Super fun, right? No, not at all.
She pulled her sunglasses off of her head and chewed on the side momentarily, just trying to buy time. Once she finally knew what she was going to say, Emma set her glasses back on top of her head and turned to Ryder, “Listen, okay I get that I said some stuff about him last year but I was angry. I just, we’d just broken up and I was mad at him. And he does do those things. He’s sweet, and nice, and funny, and talented and just everything I want okay, so if you can’t be happy for me and stop acting like my brother for two minutes then I don’t know what else to say.” she said, glaring at Ryder. “And don’t make accusations if you don’t actually know the person. All you know about Nate is the shit I said about him and what the magazines write about him and his brothers.” Emma added in. She loved Ryder but really, she thought she could actually love Nate therefor she needed to stand up for him when he wasn’t around she supposed.

making plans to raise some hell, celebratin' our senior year,we had a trashbag full of clothes and a suitcase full of beerwe got pulled over by the Alabama state patrol, but they never found the boozeso they had to let us go. He watched her try to buy time, and he automatically regretted saying those things about Nate. She apparently had a soft spot for him, and Ryder instantly regretted tapping into that. He rolled his eyes and let out a breath when she finally started talking about him. He just shrugged and listened to her. He was her best friend, it was his duty, even if he didn't want to hear it. He didn't give a damn about how amazing Nate was. In his eyes, Nate was just a guy who pulled the curtain over her eyes and she was just blindly giving into him. But no, Ryder would figure something out. He'd make it a point to win. Or at least ask around and see what he could find out.
He started laughing when she said, 'stop acting like my brother'. "You think I'm trying to act like your brother? Damn Emma, you're more blind than I thought you were." He said, standing up and walking around the fire, looking down at it. HE hadn't been acting like her brother in years. What kind of brother made a reference to himself while describing the type of guy she needed? He mumbled a bit, but she may have heard it. "Though it seems brother is all I'm ever going to be." But, he was slightly hoping she didn't catch that part.
He laughed again when she finished her sentence. "There you go assuming things again, Emma. Maybe you're right, all I know is what you've said, but if you think I've spent time reading a magazine article with his face on it, you can think again." Ever since he had broken Emma's heart, he had stayed away from anything that said or even gave hint to Connect Three. What a gay name, anyways. He just rolled his eyes at the thought and looked back at her.
He looked back to her again and shrugged. "I don't want to fight with you, because it will end badly, and it's only my first day back. But there's no way in hell you're going to force me to like him. I won't go off on him because you're my best friend and I care about you than I know he ever will. But there is no way in hell I can promise to tolerate him. You know me, Emma, if I don't like someone, they know it." He said, shrugging and walking over to sit back down next to her. This was going to be a long summer. And he was already starting to regret even showing up.

now when i caught myself I HAD TO STOP MYSELF FROM SAYING something that i should've never thought of you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Emma rolled her eyes when Ryder laughed. She was more blind then he thought she was? What the hell was that suppose to mean? She watched as he walked around the fire and just crossed her arms. Why was he so against Nate without even knowing him? At least Madison knew Emma. It wasn’t like she just decided to hate her from out of the blue. Not to mention the two were on edge with each other before Nate came along in Emma’s life. “Well if I had a brother I’m pretty sure this is the kind of thing he’d be doing,” she said, glaring at Ryder. Why was he acting like this? Ryder was supposed to back her up. He was supposed to be her best friend. Now if Emma had reason to think that Nate was a bad kid then maybe she’d think more of what Ryder said about him.
She watched him walk around the fire and strained to hear what he said next. Something about how brother was all he was ever going to mean? Again, what was that supposed to mean? Did he want to be more then her best friend? Did he like her or something? Whoa, whoa, whoa back up now. Ryder couldn’t like Emma. Sure, Emma used to have a thing for him but that was before she’d come to camp and met Nate. Now she was with him and the last thing she wanted as Ryder coming in and making everything weird.
Okay, Emma was about two seconds away from walking away and leaving Ryder by himself. The whole laughing at her thing, yeah that was kind of getting old. “Well then don’t take things I’ve said and go and use them against me or him.” she said, keeping her glare on him. Screw walking away Emma was three seconds from slapping Ryder. Hell yes she was. Everyone knew that Emma had a temper and maybe she was going to put it to good use.
She stared into the fire as Ryder sat back next to her. She really didn’t want to fight with him either but if he was just going to come in and insult everything here then she wasn’t going to take it. Ryder was just like Emma in the way that he didn’t take shit lying down. And there was the fact that if they didn’t like someone it wasn’t a secret. Take Madison for instance, Emma didn’t pretend to like her even though she was her boyfriends best friend. So okay, this was all very hypocritical. Emma was bitching out Ryder for judging Nate when Emma, never mind. Scratch that. Emma wasn’t judging Madison. Emma had known Madison for years and the hatred just grew on them. “Just, don’t ruin what I have with him. Seriously Ryder, I really like him.” Emma said turning to face Ryder. If Ryder managed to ruin what her and Nate had then she would be royaly pissed off at him.

making plans to raise some hell, celebratin' our senior year,we had a trashbag full of clothes and a suitcase full of beerwe got pulled over by the Alabama state patrol, but they never found the boozeso they had to let us go. He just let her be pissed. And he let her talk. The last thing he needed was for her to walk away and never come back, and that was exactly what it looked like she was on the verge to do. But he was getting relatively pissed that she was going off on him for judging Nate when she had hated Madison since the day she met her. She knew Emma had never taken the time to get to know her. They had never been friends. They just hated each other. That much Ryder knew. And he found it very hypocritical that she thought for even a second her yelling was justified.
He shrugged. "Okay, Emma, I won't. I'll just have to talk to him and judge him based on what I find out." He said, simply. Ryder had a way of finding things out easily. It wouldn't be hard to smooth talk his way into some information. Maybe he'd have a chat with Madison. If Nate was as far up Emma's ass as she thought he was, he wouldn't care if Ryder happened to hit on her to get information. But damn, Ryder couldn't pull himself to do that. The only girl he wanted was Emma, the mere thought of flirting with someone else ruined it.
He sighed and looked down at the ground as she asked him not to ruin her and Nate. "Explain to me exactly what you have, and I'll promise not to ruin it." He said, waiting for a reply. He knew she wouldn't be able to say much. What? That's he's nice? That he's talented? So was Ryder. If she couldn't be all giddy and happy and tell him exactly why she was with Nate, then Ryder wouldn't be satisfied and wouldn't leave her alone about this. He was very tempted to just kiss her out of the blue. She wouldn't be cheating on Nate. After all, she didn't kiss him. The thought was going through his head, and he wondered, what the hell?
He turned to her, his eyes locking on hers for a minute. "Emma, I'm sorry I jumped to conclusions about Nate. But there's something I'd like to find out from you." He said, before just leaning in and kissing her out of the blue. When his lips touched hers, he felt a spark. It felt right. He pulled back quickly and looked back at the fire for a minute. He turned back to her. "If you can honestly tell me you felt nothing there, then I'll back off. I'm just your best friend, I'll move on, and I will give you no more hell about you and Nate." He said, his eyes focused on hers.

now when i caught myself I HAD TO STOP MYSELF FROM SAYING something that i should've never thought of you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fine. After Ryder got to know Nate then he could judge him however he wanted. If he honestly thought he was an asshole after getting to know him, then maybe Emma would take what he said into consideration. But really, Mitchie liked Nate just fine. In fact, the two were supremely close. Even after the break up last summer, so why couldn’t Ryder try to do that? How come he couldn’t make an honest attempt. Well, actually it seemed like he was going to so freaking good for him. They could eat lunch together. Emma could get them together and then casually leave. Damn, she was good.
She had to think for a minute about what Ryder said next. She didn’t know how to explain what her and Nate had. She knew that whatever it was, she liked it. He was her boyfriend. Not Ryder, he was the best friend. They were two different things. “He makes me feel like I don’t have to be perfect and that the fact that I explode on people regularly is okay. He doesn’t judge me because I’m not perfect and I don’t have the same glamorous super star life he does.” she said, happy with her answer. That was what they had. The first summer they were together that deffinitley wasn’t what they had. They use to get in horrible screaming fights, and Emma just felt like she had to hold back with him, which she never did. But this year Nate had done something because now whenever Emma felt like being a bitch and yelling, Nate didn’t yell back but he managed to get her to shut the hell up.
So bam. Emma had managed to tell Ryder what they had, and he couldn’t change her answer. She’d changed too, and unlike what people thought it wasn’t all for him. Her temper was better, and really she hadn’t been drinking as much. Sure, she did once and a while but that was only because she’d been so stressed out from her classes lately that she just couldn’t handle it all. But she’d told Nate that she’d be fine and that she wouldn’t go overboard, which she had yet to do. She was fine. If anyone ever went off on her for the whole drinking thing she’d say the exact same thing that she said to Nate. Now, she had it all planned out. When she’d told Nate it was all on a whim.
She opened her mouth to say something along the lines of ‘what’ but was cut off. By what you ask? By Ryders freaking lips, that’s what. Aha, so he did like her. Well this was interesting. Once he pulled away she groaned. Fuck. Honestly, there had been a little something there and she really didn’t want to admit to it. She was supposed to be with Nate. She was supposed to be able to love Nate. Why was this all changing? So now everything she’d just said about what her and Nate had was screwed. She stood up and began pacing back in fourth. “No, I can’t do this. I have a boyfriend. You could have had me, but you didn’t take the opportunity. You missed me and now it’s too late.” she said, but most of it was a lie. Really, Emma was debating whether or not she wanted to kiss him this time. She sat back down and covered her face with her hands. “I hate you,” she mumbled, but she didn’t really. She only hated him because he was making her think. Damn him.

making plans to raise some hell, celebratin' our senior year,we had a trashbag full of clothes and a suitcase full of beerwe got pulled over by the Alabama state patrol, but they never found the boozeso they had to let us go. Ryder wasn't satisfied with her answer at all. She had described how Nate made her feel. Not what they had. She didn't say anything about loving him, or trusting him, or truly and totally thinking he was the one for her. There was still hope. He didn't laugh or smirk this time, because it would only get her riled up yet again and that was the last thing he wanted.
After the kiss, Emma started freaking out, but she didn't say anything to tell him she hadn't wanted it. She had merely said, 'I can't do this, I have a boyfriend.' She didn't say, 'I felt nothing, I'm in love with Nate.' She was telling herself she didn't like Ryder simply because she had a boyfriend. She was in great denial and Ryder wouldn't let that happen. He wanted her to face it up front. She was strong, she could handle this.
He watched her pace and was honestly thinking about just getting up and walking away, leaving her with her thoughts, but that wasn't like him. Ryder was the type to watch her during an emotional state of time. Not like she would, but he didn't want her like, throwing herself into the fire or anything. She sat back down and put her face in her hands and said she hated him. He knew it wasn't true, but the words themselves hurt him a little.
He got up and squatted down in front of her, grabbing her hands from her face and pulling them down into her lap. He wanted her to look directly at him when he said this. "Is it too late, Emma?" He said, his eyes looking up at hers directly. "Emma Grant, I've been in love with you since the day I met you. When you liked me, you were going off to camp and I thought you were lying. I didn't want to be truthful and tell you that I felt the same. And while it may be too late, I'm telling you now. You're the only girl I've ever truly wanted to be with. You understand me, I understand you. We fight like hell, but we make up all the time because that's who we are. If you look at me and tell me that the feeling isn't mutual, then it's okay. I won't think less of you, and I definitely won't leave your life. We'll pretend like I never said it... but the fact is out there, I did say it. And it's not changing anytime soon." He said, just looking at her eyes, praying for a positive reaction.

now when i caught myself I HAD TO STOP MYSELF FROM SAYING something that i should've never thought of you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why? Why, why, why, why, WHY? There were a million different emotions running through Emma’s head at the moment and she really couldn’t handle them. She felt like she was about to explode, and maybe she’d do just that. Then if that happened she wouldn’t have to deal with Ryder or Nate. Emma moved her hand to her lips, right where Ryder had kissed her. Emma knew what she felt. She couldn’t just give up on Nate right away so yes, she still had feelings for him but now at the same time she couldn’t help but begin to like Ryder again. Just an hour ago, that had been Nate kissing Emma before he went to his cabin and Emma went to go see Ryder. And now it was Ryder kissing Emma and Emma knowing that she liked it, but not wanting to admit to it. Emma was just scared that if she admited to it then she’d have Ryder, and no longer have Nate. And then what if Ryder broke her heart? Emma had managed to let Nate in and fully trust him. Sure, she trusted Ryder but as her best friend. Not as her boyfriend. She just didn’t know if she could do it.
Emma bit her lip as Ryder took her hands away from her face. Honestly, Emma was wanting to just shove Ryder into the fire and have it be done with. But that would A. be murder, and B. be stupid because what if she did like him? Okay, we’ve already been over this. She did like him, she thought, but she didn’t want to get hurt. So that was what we were settling on? Okay, she better not go changing her mind all around now. She shrugged once he asked her if it was too late. Maybe. She’d liked him, he could have had her but instead he just let her go to camp without saying anything. Emma then met Nate, they dated, they broke up, Emma cried to Ryder about it and now Emma was with Nate and Ryder was admitting these feelings. Men just sucked with timing, Emma knew that much. Why could Ryder had said this before she’d left for camp? Then Nate wouldn’t even be a part of this whole thing!
She laughed slowly, shaking her head. She really didn’t want to hear what he was saying at all. Emma hadn’t meant for it to be a rude, like wow you’re an idiot laugh. It was more of an I can’t believe your doing this to me right now. She just really couldn’t believe what was going on. Ryder said that he loved her. Now love, Emma wasn’t so sure about love. She thought that she was close to loving Nate, but now look where she was. She looked at Ryder, and then back down to her shoes. “I’d say that I love you too, but I just, I can’t deal with something happening with us. I mean, what happens when we break up? You’re my best friend. You’re all that I have when I go home to Boston. I don’t have Mitchie any more, and now that I wouldn’t have Nate…I just, I don’t want to get hurt again.” she said. That was what she thought, and if Ryder didn’t like it then that was just too damn bad.

making plans to raise some hell, celebratin' our senior year,we had a trashbag full of clothes and a suitcase full of beerwe got pulled over by the Alabama state patrol, but they never found the boozeso they had to let us go. Ryder's heart fell as she came to a conclusion. She didn't want him. Well, she did, but she was afraid he would hurt her? What the hell? He was the only one who had ever proven to her that he wouldn't hurt her. Everyone else in the world had let her down. Her mom, Nate, everyone. He was the only one who had stuck by her through everything and here he was being the one she feared hurting her? That wasn't right. His lips formed tight, and he swallowed the huge lump in his throat he had just gotten.
Was it really so hard for her to admit that she liked him? Sure, she was starting to love Nate, but Ryder had been there since day one. Damn, they had known each other in diapers for Christ's sake. It was still pissing him off to no end that she was worried HE would hurt her. Of all people... the one person who had never hurt her. He resolved himself a little before speaking, but his words were shaking. "I can't promise you that we would stay together as a couple, but I will promise you one thing. Emma Grant, I will never break your heart. I've promised you that since day one. You will forever be my best friend, and if we date and it doesn't work, then it didn't work. But at least we gave it a chance."
He said, shrugging. "But I'm not going to force you into anything. I don't know Nate, and I don't know exactly what you feel for him. But I know how I feel for you, and in all honesty, if I know the feelings aren't returned even in the slightest, then I'm going home. I only came here for you... and I'm not going to stay here all summer watching you and Nate together." He said, standing up and looking down at her. "So please, Emma, tell me if there's any reason for me to stay here. We don't even have to date, but give me a reason to stay here. Or I'm on the next plane to Boston." He just wanted out of this situation right now.

now when i caught myself I HAD TO STOP MYSELF FROM SAYING something that i should've never thought of you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Emma couldn’t even look at Ryder. Why? Because she could tell that her answer was killing him. Over the years Emma had been prone to letting people in who didn’t belong. People who would be in her life for two minutes and then the next second they’d turned on her. That was why she was happy with Nate. She felt secure with him, like he wasn’t going to leave her. In Emma’s eyes Nate really didn’t do wrong, and that was the worst part. Nate was a normal person of course he did wrong. He wasn’t perfect, no body was. She didn’t hold the bar up too high for everyone, did she? Maybe it was her who had driven people away. Well damn Ryder for making her think about all of this. She really hated having to take a good look at herself and admit that she’d been screwing up and not everyone else. It was just hard.
All Emma needed to say was that she wanted Ryder. That she needed him in her life, not just as her best friend but as more than that. She just couldn’t get the words to leave her mouth though. Not while she still had Nate. He was more or less holding her back from saying those things right now. But what could she do? She really didn’t want to end things with Nate. But she didn’t want to let Ryder go. Ryder had been there for her for at least thirteen years, and Nate had only been there for two yet at the moment Emma was trusting Nate over Ryder. At the beginning of the summer Nate had told Emma that his only reason for not getting back together was because he didn’t want to break her heart. Emma had told Nate not to worry about her because she could handle it, yet here she was using that excuse. She didn’t want to let him in because of the fact that he could easily break her heart if he wanted too.
Except for the fact that it was crazy to think that Ryder would want to break Emma’s heart. He was coming out and saying that even if they didn’t last he wouldn’t hurt her. That basically meant no cheating, or anything like that. Well Emma was seconds away from cheating on Nate so how could she be certain that she wouldn’t cheat on Ryder too? Maybe that was just what she was. A big lame cheater. Nate hadn’t done anything to her and she really didn’t want to do anything to him. He was the one worried about breaking her heart, but what if she broke his? Simple, he’d have his heart broken but he’d never show it. Guys never show emotion well.
Emma watched as Ryder stood up and she kept her eyes on the fire. She didn’t know what to say. Come on Emma, just say the words ‘don’t go, I want you here.’ And then he would say ‘why do you want me here?’ and Emma would say, ‘BECAUSE I LOVE YOU, YOU IDIOT’ and then that would be that. Ryder would be in, but would Nate be out? She could just drop him in a second. It really wasn’t that easy. “I don’t want you to go,” she said, standing up. “You want me to say it? Fine, I’ll say it. I like you! Okay? I want you to stay here with me forever, because if you left then I wouldn’t know what to do,” she finally said, not caring that there were eyes on her. Whoops, maybe she should have been a bit quieter.
